Utility software are programs that have been made to help a computer run more efficiently

Compression Software

There are two uses of compression:

  • Less storage: Compression reduces the size of files meaning less space is taken up

  • Faster speeds: Compressed files have faster upload and download times

It is used in the case of fire, theft or other computer error

Defragmentation

Files can become fragmented which means they are spread far apart over the hard disk

Defragmentation brings the fragments together making the files quicker to access

Backup Software

There are two types of backup software:

  • Full: Backup of all files, usually done weekly

  • Incremental: New and used files only, usually done daily

It is used in the case of fire, theft or other computer error

Encryption

Plain text can be encrypted with a key, this turns it into cipher text

The text cannot be decrypted without that key

Antivirus

Antivirus scans a device and quarantines or deletes suspicious files

The software must be updated regularly as new viruses are constantly being made
